National News/National Editorial 17 The Afghanistan War
The State of the Union 3 James Republican Strategy 17
12-1-09 Afghanistan War
President Obama Today signed and approved the increase of 30,000 U.S. Troops within 6 months to be deployed in Afghanistan. For the past 8 weeks, there has been increased pressure on the Administration to make a decision on whether or not to increase troop levels. General McChrystal asked for 40,000 more troops to aid in the NATO mission.
The Afghanistan War started after the leaders of the U.S. in 2001 used the 9-11 attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania as the main reason to go to War in Afghanistan. President Bush was not in Washington during the 9-11 attacks. The Attacks in the U.S. homeland changed people’s perception on people from Asia, and it changed the National Economy by it creating more government job positions and agencies. People were becoming employees of the government working in secret during the time after 9-11 and all if it was for the purpose to fight the terrorists, and if at home there was a connection. With all the proof tallied since 9-11-01 on what happened and the way TV created this lack of information shortly afterward, the Afghanistan War was signed into the mission to fight against terrorists.
The main terrorist Osama Bin Laden was said to be the main conspirator of the attacks, all three of them. Shortly after the Afghanistan War, the U.S. Army forces had Bin Laden in grasp, and it was reported just recently 8 years later, that he was let go, or escaped into Pakistan where Musharraf is running the country. The War on Terror may have had a turning point right there, but instead, the mission of the U.S. forces at the time, they didn’t question it, and we don’t know if any people did or not. The bottom line is that a force could have retrieved Osama Bin Laden before he entering Pakistan, then try him for the 9-11 attacks, and determine if the other two were all connected or if they were separate. How much did he know, and how much was he involved? Instead, he was let go into Pakistan. Soon after the War on Terror was switched to Iraq and that was on the next platform for the Administration.
The Iraq War diverted all the attention, money, and War on Terror for all that time. Now, the leaders are explaining why it is so urgent to continue to help the Afghan Government to bring security.
At the time in 2001, Al Qaeda leaders had training camps in Afghanistan. All the Agencies knew it.
In fact, the Agencies didn’t properly do there job on how they reacted during the 9-11 attacks. Then a wing or knowledge of used that as the excuse the attacks to go to war in Afghanistan which later removed the Taliban from government. The Taliban government at the time had rejected claims that they had anything to do with the 9-11 attacks, but soon after, the U.S. forces swept through Kabul and Kandahar and the Taliban Government scattered to other parts of the country. We were told that the mission in Afghanistan was for the U.S to apprehend Osama Bin Laden and destroy the Al Qaeda group within the country. The first missions did put a damper on the enemy.
The Iraq War also had fights amongst Al Qaeda. We were told very little on that issue in Iraq, but what we do know is that Iraqi’s within Iraq had to fight against those Al Qaeda’s themselves. During the Iraq War, there were many clashes amongst the groups in Iraq where it was a more police and security issue.
The Increase of 30,000 troops is something that most Republicans have been asking President Obama to do. The mission seems different for those that are Republican and those that are Democrat in the United States, and the longer this mission lasts, it hurts the parties by exposing individuals. How was this war started, why did the U.S. assume a War Effort after the Soviet Union was there for the prior War. It is in between the two wars, we know little about, but some do. This War in Afghanistan is something that I prefer not to debate like I did on the Iraq War mostly because I thought the Iraq War was a diversion what we were told, and that effort needed to be applied in Afghanistan.
The News Media did little questioning at the time of 2001 of why the Afghanistan War was happening. The Mission has not been defined until now where the mission is to stabilize the Afghan Government and train security forces, and go out and do missions outside the perimeters.
General McChrystal had a good strategy I think when he was on 60 minutes a few weeks ago. He claimed that the U.S. Forces need to change the course on how they fight the War. First he said for the U.S. War strategy is to have people on the ground work on being friendly to the Afghan People. Protecting the schools, serving as roll models, and something else he mentioned was while the War was going on limit the attacks on civilian areas and coordinate better on how the U.S. Forces fight the enemy. The main reason is that there have been drone attacks or air attacks that have killed civilians in pursuit of terrorists (we are not told if they are Al Qaedas or Taliban). General McChrystal also said that he needed 40,000 more troops to protect the troops already there. Now the U.S. Forces are still under the NATO command, and the mission continues long after 9-11-01. It is a War and a Mission that has not brought on a quick result. In fact, now the sides are showing themselves more on how each react towards news there.
One thing that is noticeable is that there are American elements within the Taliban. There have been reports and also people like John Walker, and it is apparent that there are things about the War we are not familiar with. The Taliban seem to be more supported by Democrats also that is a far fetched statement to make. The longer this war plays out sometimes I understand why President Bush made some of those decisions going there into Afghanistan. Iraq and Afghanistan both border Iran. Iran has benefited the most by the War in Afghanistan. There have been many things about the War we are not even told. The information is not good, and the U.S. Army for all the personnel & money going to the Mission, they should have more journalists within the Army recording the mission so that people here feel and see that the mission is worth fighting. This is something that has not been talked about and any press coverage the agencies, the Administration acts as if it is taboo.
The Agencies let us down 9-11-01. First they were non existent during the attacks themselves. Second the information and pictures we got from people are not consistent on how the attacks took place and should have been handled. It was almost like the breakdown was deliberate. The scenes to create prejudice has back fired, and ruined the American Economy, and it may not recover from the amount of money spent since 9-11-01 and the fact that Osama Bin Laden is still out there, and was let get away. The Amount of people affected by having there loved ones serve in Afghanistan they are owed the explanation that 9-11-01 is not the reason why we are there, and to change the idea that the attacks are a good reason to continue This War on Terror. It creates unnecessary dislike, and it is bad education. Now 8 years later, the leaders are asking the younger people whom soon go to college to serve in a War that they should have already had concluded by the prior Army groups.
This was all calculated, from within the Soviet Union, in the United States, as an excuse to go back and forth on the support for and against the War from all the way back. The longer this war goes on, the more we learn about the Soviet Union, and the United States, and most of all how their histories are connected. This is where we are at.
President Obama stated that the final goal of the mission is for the U.S. to commence on withdrawing from Afghanistan July 2011.
